Hello, and thank you for visiting this website.
My name is John McVey. I’m a German born Scotsman, currently living in the north east of that bonny land, but originally from the west coast.
As a German born child brought up in Scotland during the seventies, when war memories still lingered within the minds of many within older generations, therefore still influencing the young, my nationality attracted much unwanted attention. At a time when bullying at school came still within the “boys will be boys” category, little was ever done to counter the attentions I received. At around 12 years however, my school decided it would be a great idea to eliminate my lingering German accent. So, they sent me to a speech therapist. Such as it was, the innovation of school teachers of the seventies, to utilise a speech therapist in the fight against the school bully. Imagine how the press would react to something like that today! Safety before Heritage?
As a young man, my German accent all but gone, I ventured unto the world…
My young life led me to a particular dislike of prejudice, be it national, religious, or any other kind which seeks to deprive individuals of their right to just be who they are.
Much of my life prior to this is certainly contrary and I have to say the change in me is significant. It goes to show anyone can improve their lot if they are determined enough.
I believe it is up to everyone to decide for themselves who they are. We all feel our way through life as best we can, learning and growing as we go.
In a world where everybody and it’s dog is trying to tell you what to think, here is a place where you are encouraged to make up your own mind.
My Spirituality & Divination
I’d like to tell you a little about how I ended up doing this. For sure if anyone told me 20 years ago that I would be reading tarot cards in the future, I wouldn’t have believed them.
My perspective was that I needed science to tell me that something was real before I would believe it. I scoffed at such things as divination and mediumship, putting them down as superstitious nonsense. I was an objectivist, or that’s what I thought.
I read books mainly espousing business based objective ideologies and steered well clear of anything “mystical.”
Or at least I did, for a few years. It’s a strange feeling you get though, when somehow you just know that there’s something “missing” from your world view, but you just can’t nail it down. There was a deeply hidden part of me crying to be heard, but being suppressed in the name of objectivism.
How strange that I didn’t acknowledge my own “mystical” nature, when I always seemed to feel drawn to the bookstore or library just at the right time for my next book to “jump out” at me almost as soon as I found myself right there in front of where it’s sitting on the shelf. How strange I didn’t notice the lights change in my favour all the way there. How strange I didn’t notice those little synchronicities and how my reading choices slowly led me to a somewhat different world view than that of the staunch objectivist.
I’ve always believed that it’s important to look at all sides of an argument before making up my mind about what to believe. As such, my reading expanded beyond the strictly objective, as I began to delve into that mystical space I had previously avoided.
I grew up with little faith in the dogmatism and “hell and damnation” type rhetoric of contemporary religions, who I feel use fear of retribution as a means of power and control. My nose therefore led me towards the older faiths and religions and I quickly developed a strong affinity with paganism, particularly wicca.
By this time, I was studying runic lore and how to read and interpret rune stones. In 2005, I bought my first deck of tarot cards.
The more I read, the more I practised. The more I practised, the more it worked. The more it worked, the more I believed.
So over many years, the sceptic turned into the believer and reading turned into practising.
My personal study over the years finally led to my adopting a mainly non-denominational pagan philosophy, and I became a member of the Universal Life Church in March 2016.
I decided that it’s time to share my experience with others, by offering a spiritual and divinatory service. My tarot and oracle card reading services have been available since August 2017.
I can remember getting my first SLR camera back in the 1980's. It was a Canon and set me back about £500, allot of money at the time. I had an amazing time with it, despite having no clue about how to properly use it. That said, I instantly fell in love with photography and haven't looked back since. For many years though, work and other commitments prevented me from spending the time on my photography hobby that I wanted to.
I always had a camera though. Even when mobile phone companies started including cameras in their phones, I could never settle. Then came smart phones and much better phone cameras. Still not good enough for me. Beyond an occasional snap or selfie for Facebook, it has to be a "real camera" as far as I'm concerned.
In the age of digital photography, megapixels aren't everything. In fact, many of the more expensive compact cameras now come with a smaller megapixel count, but with a larger sensor. Not withstanding that the choice of camera isn't as important as the skills of the photographer, cramming 20+ megapixels onto the tiny sensor that comes on a mobile device isn't great for image quality.
I now have a couple of great point and shoot compact cameras for every day carry and a small camcorder for video. For more serious photography, I've opted for an interchangeable lens compact system camera (or CSC).
With many years of experience with a hobby I love, I'm now a serious enthusiast photographer who takes occasional photographic commissions to help keep the wolves from the door. In the main though, I really just want to have fun with it.
Many thanks and enjoy this, my little place on the internet.
